A Golden Retriever × Poodle cross

The Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, usually a Standard, Miniature, or Toy Poodle. First developed in the 1990s, the mix was created with companionship in mind, blending the Golden Retriever’s friendly, eager-to-please nature with the Poodle’s intelligence and often low-shedding coat. If you are researching Goldendoodle puppies in Michigan, this guide covers temperament, coat, grooming, exercise, training, and family suitability to help you decide whether the breed is a good match for your home. Pittsford Puppies is based in Pittsford, Michigan. We don’t currently raise Goldendoodles; contact us with questions, or explore our Cavapoo, Dachshund, and French Bulldog guides.

Overview

What is a Goldendoodle?

A Goldendoodle is a deliberate cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Because it is a crossbreed, two puppies from the same litter can look and behave quite differently — their adult size, coat texture, shedding level, and temperament all depend on the traits they inherit from each parent. Size is influenced by the Poodle parent: Standard Poodles produce larger dogs, while Miniature or Toy Poodles produce smaller ones, often called mini or petite Goldendoodles.

Goldendoodles are sometimes described as “designer dogs,” but they are simply a cross of two established breeds. They are not a guarantee of any single coat type, size, or personality, so it helps to learn about both parent breeds before deciding whether a Goldendoodle is the right match for your home.

Personality

Temperament & character

Every dog is an individual, but the Goldendoodle is generally known for a distinctive set of traits that shape life with them.

  • Friendly, outgoing, and people-oriented, often thriving as part of an active family.
  • Intelligent and eager to please, which makes training rewarding for both dog and owner.
  • Gentle and affectionate, typically good with children and other pets when well socialized.
  • Energetic and playful, enjoying games, walks, and time spent with their people.

Caring for your Goldendoodle

Grooming, exercise & training

Grooming

  • Goldendoodle coats may be wavy, curly, or relatively straight, and regular brushing — several times a week — helps prevent tangles and mats, especially in longer or curlier coats.
  • Professional grooming every four to eight weeks helps keep the coat trimmed, clean, and manageable.
  • Routine nail trims, ear checks and cleaning (floppy ears can trap moisture), and consistent dental care complete a healthy grooming routine.

Exercise

  • Daily walks, active play, and activities that engage their bright minds keep a Goldendoodle content.
  • They often enjoy retrieving games, swimming, and gentle training challenges that use their Golden Retriever heritage.
  • Exercise needs vary with size, age, and individual energy level; puppies do best with short, positive, age-appropriate activity.

Training

  • Smart and willing, Goldendoodles generally respond well to short, upbeat, positive-reinforcement sessions.
  • Early socialization — calm exposure to new people, sounds, and friendly animals — helps build a confident adult.
  • Consistency and encouragement go a long way; they are sensitive dogs and respond poorly to harsh corrections.

Living with a Goldendoodle

Goldendoodles may suit many types of households, including active families and homes with yards, provided their exercise, grooming, companionship, and training needs are met. Their size and energy vary, so consider the individual dog and the time you can offer before choosing a Goldendoodle.
